Every Secret Thing

1h 32m Crime, Drama, Mystery 2013

Nearly a decade ago, a quiet suburb on the outskirts of New York City was rocked by tragedy when an infant was kidnapped from the porch of her home and discovered dead a few days later by a young police officer named Nancy Porter (Elizabeth Banks). The tragedy turned to shock and horror when it was discovered that the perpetrators were two eight year-old girls, Alice Manning and Ronnie Fuller, who were convicted and sent to a juvenile detention facility. Now 18 years old and released from custody, Alice (Danielle Macdonald) and Ronnie (Dakota Fanning) return to their hometown. They have barely spoken to each other, and each seems eager to put the past behind them, though neither seems to have much of a future. But only a few days after their release, a toddler goes missing, and the similarities between the cases are striking: both missing children were girls of mixed race parentage. Although it seems like a longshot, Porter, now a full detective, and her partner Jones (Nate Parker), interview Alice and Ronnie to see if there is any connection. Ronnie seems shell-shocked from her incarceration: raised in a very poor family, she has always maintained that the original crime was Alice’s idea, and insists that she doesn’t know anything about the current kidnapping. Alice grew up with an overly attentive single mother, Helen (Diane Lane), and has grown into a surly young woman. Still seething with resentment, she seems to insinuate to the police that Ronnie must be the perpetrator, since she was the one responsible for the incident a decade ago. As Porter tries to put the pieces together over a frantic couple of days hoping to find the baby alive and prevent yet another unimaginable tragedy, Ronnie and Alice inevitably collide, as years of accusations, resentment, and secrets are unearthed and painful truths are finally revealed.
